Come learn about the Asylum Hill Project and share memories of the Old Asylum and its residents during Old Asylum History Days, a special event set for 9 a.m.-4 p.m. July 19 and July 20.

The free, public event will be held in the School of Health Related Professions on the University of Mississippi Medical Center campus. The former Mississippi State Lunatic Asylum, which operated from 1855-1935, was located on the grounds of what is now UMMC.

Registration is offered but not required. For a schedule or to sign up, email asylumhillproject@umc.edu or call (601) 984-6790. You can also share your story through our web portal.

The Asylum Hill Project, with support from the National Endowment for the Humanities, is collecting stories of the descendants of patients and employees at the Old Asylum as well as long-time area residents who may have memories of the Old Asylum buildings and grounds. The Asylum was renamed the State Insane Hospital in 1900.

Archaeological studies undertaken by UMMC in 2012 revealed the existence of as many as 7,000 graves located on the only remaining undeveloped part of the main campus.

Attendees at Old Asylum History Days can have their stories and photographs about the Old Asylum recorded to video. Organizers welcome those who had a relative who was a patient or employee and those who lived in the Asylum neighborhood and remember the old grounds and buildings.

Also planned are presentations about the history of the Old Asylum and plans for the Asylum Hill Project; information on how to preserve your own family photos, documents and memorabilia; free high-resolution scanning of your photos and documents; and free archival sleeves for your photos and documents.
